A technology horror movie doesn't necessarily need to be relatable to be scary. In fact, part of what makes this flick such nightmare fuel is how the technology's secrecy means it could be part of our everyday world right now - without us even knowing.

Possessor is a movie written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg. It's beautiful to see the son of the legendary director David making it onto the same list as his father. There's clearly a running gene in their family that gives them a twisted ability to manipulate technological horror.

It tells the story of a secret organisation that uses special equipment to possess people and use them as host bodies to carry out assassinations. The leading figure is a skilled member of this organisation called Vos, who accidentally mishandles one of these jobs and ends up trapped inside on of her victims.

In typical Cronenberg style, the film is filled with grotesque practical effects that make the title's imagery horribly gory. It was one of 2020s most gruesome outings, thanks to the violence and the horrifying concept. It's a bleak examination of unbelievable technology but is based in an all too familiar world.
