10 Scariest Technology Horror Movies
9. Brainscan
There is an obvious disconnect between the audience and the product when playing video games. Players are aware that nobody is really getting hurt when they're playing a title, so it's easy to feel utterly unconflicted about your actions. However, Brainscan terrifyingly addresses the idea of being tricked into unwittingly bringing these video game habits into real life.
The movie follows a young, isolated boy called Michael Brower - played by Edward Furlong. This lonely teenager discovers a game that allows him to commit a litany of brutal murders through the eyes of a killer avatar. However, after the game is over, he finds evidence suggesting the deaths really did occur, and he committed them.
It's a fascinating concept, and the movie brings it to life with some irreverent joy, as it isn't shy about delving into the comedy of the situation. One of the main highlights has to be T. Ryder Smith as The Trickster, an evil figure who exists with Brower after the game's events. His prosthetic make-up is excellent, and Ryder brings a campy joy to the role that's very in-keeping with the 90s vibe.
While Brainscan is rough around the edges, the concept is so frightening that it carries you through, and some gory and thrilling scares juxtapose the fun tone.
