10 Scariest Technology Horror Movies
7. Strangeland
This is a film that doesn't go too hard on the technological aspects of the premise. Instead it focusses on the impact that can be had over the internet and the general anxieties of the still new technology in the late 90s. It takes this subtle fear and turns it into an exploitive and bombastic movie about sadism, violence and body torture.
Strangeland follows a detective named Mike Gage and his pursuits against an influential sadist who believes in bringing "enlightenment" through ritual pain. This terrifying man lures teenagers to be a part of this through an internet chatroom.
While the film is cheap-looking, poorly acted and overall emotionally flat, the concept is fascinating. It plays into the twisted side of the internet, even before social media was a factor. There's a plethora of violent and mutilated imagery that makes the film a thoroughly uncomfortable watch, and the predatory nature of the antagonist makes it painfully real.
Another plus point to the film is that it's written by and stars the lead singer of Twisted Sister, Dee Snider. This adds another layer to the bonkers project.
Although, one thing that should be noted is that it presents an unfair and ill-suited look upon those who enjoy body modification.
