10. Alpha 60 - Alphaville (1965)
Alphaville has a very overdone plot, but back in 1965 it was relatively unique. In Alphaville, humans now live in a society run by a computer (Alpha 60) who has outlawed emotion and individuality. Our hero, a secret agent from the outlands, falls in love with a woman from Alphaville, introduces her to the concept of emotion, destroys the computer, and frees the mind of his lady-love. I know you've seen similar movies, but Alphaville is one of the first. I love this movie. It's sometimes hard to appreciate the subtle brilliance of the film, but it's worth the effort. The film noir cinematography is outstandingly applied and creates a terrific effect for this dark sci-fi movie. Oh, and Alpha 60's voice is CREEPY. In a stroke of genius, director Jean-Luc Godard used a man who had his larynx removed due to cancer as the voice of Alpha 60. The man was forced to use a mechanical voice box after his surgery, and its effect as the voice of Alpha 60 greatly added to the evil emanating off the computer. Make sure you watch this one.
