10 Scary Supercomputers From Movie History

Scary Super Computers - Resident Evil - The Red Queen It€™s time for yet another of my articles about artificial life in movie and television history. This article will be the 6th article in my ongoing series featuring robots, cyborgs, and sentient computers. In the first three articles, 14 Awesome Movie Robots You€™ve Forgotten,15 More Movie Robots You€™ve Probably Forgotten, and 12 Awesome Robots From TV History, we dealt only with robots. With my cyborg articles, 10 Awesome Cyborgs in Movie History and 10 Awesome Cyborgs in TV History, we moved on to cyborgs. Now, we're looking at evil supercomputers from movie history. For each of the articles above, I set up a few laws to restrict the size of the articles. Known as Tim€™s Laws, these rules are adjusted for each article. Tim€™s First Law states that only malevolent, sentient computers can be used in this article, meaning robots and other ambulatory computers are excluded. I will, because I am feeling especially non-prejudiced today, allow intelligent computer programs (as opposed to full-fledged intelligent computers) to make an appearance in this article. Tim€™s Second Law states that only computers with a significant role in a movie are allowed. Television computers will not be tolerated nor will computers that merely existed in a background role. Tim€™s Third Law states that an evil supercomputer is defined as a computer or computer program with plans to harm or eliminate humans. That leaves out guys such as Joshua in War Games. Of course, the determination of an evil computer is up to me. Tim€™s Fourth Law states that no kid shows, animated movies, anime, puppets, or anything else of that ilk is allowed in this article. That€™s it. Let€™s get started. Here are 10 scary supercomputers, in no particular order, from movie history.

Somewhat Honorable Mentions:

The Invisible Boy (1957) - This one has too much comedy to make my list. It does, however, have Robby the Robot so I had to mention it. Airplane II: The Sequel (1982) - ROK - "Blow ROK?" - I love that line. Ganheddo (1989) - Kyron-5 - I just couldn't bring myself to put this one on my list. Logan's Run (1976) - Not really an evil computer, but it does dictate that humans die at age 30. Superman III (1983) - This movie was just too silly for me to take the supercomputer seriously.

Tim is a varied character. He's lived on three continents. He hates ice cream. He has been a highly-paid computer programmer. He invents collectible card games. He is a coffee shop owner. He has had fantasy stories published in magazines. Eventually he wishes to retire from life and become a professional 10-pin bowler who writes articles while living in his RV and traveling from bowling tournament to bowling tournament with his faithful wife in tow. And of course, Tim is a major horror and science fiction fan.
