10 Sci-Fi Films To Be Genuinely Excited About In 2016

2. Midnight Special

Release Date: March 18, 2016 Another Force Awakens star that has clearly caught the sci-fi bug is Adam Driver, who signed on to join Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton and Michael Shannon in Midnight Special, a film written and directed by the man behind Take Shelter (2011) and Mud (2012) Jeff Nichols. Nichols has said that Midnight Special was inspired by the John Carpenter films of the 1980s and described it as sci-fi chase film that, despite its premise, is actually more grounded than Mud. It follows the plight of a father named Roy (Shannon) who is desperate to protect his uniquely gifted eight-year-old son from an intrusive government body as well as an extreme religious sect, both of whom have an interest in his boy€™s abilities. Joined by Joel Edgerton and Kirsten Dunst€™s characters, the foursome embark on a mission to get the boy to a secret location before they are all captured. If Nichols€™ previous work is anything to go by, this should be as gritty as sci-fi gets, and if it turns out to be half as good as either Take Shelter or Mud then it€™ll definitely be worth your time. While the plot doesn't exactly come across as groundbreaking, the talented cast Nichols has assembled add to the potential for a hit here. The director has already proven that he knows how to get the best out of Michael Shannon, and his co-stars (none of whom are strangers to the genre) all have a number of memorable performances under their belts. Nichols has said that Midnight Special will be his Starman, and that statement alone is enough to get the pulse racing in sci-fi circles.

Phil still hasn't got round to writing a profile yet, as he has an unhealthy amount of box sets on the go.
