10 Sci-Fi Horror Movie Aliens That Make Space TERRIFYING

5. The Sarlacc

Sure, this one's a bit of a cheat, as the beloved Sarlacc doesn't appear in a horror film, but then who hasn't had nightmares about being lost within the belly of the beast?

While not yet present in the horror alien canon, the Sarlacc is undeniably a creature of stomach-churning, limb-ripping capabilities, and the groundwork is there if Kathleen Kennedy ever fancies developing the adult branch of the Star Wars series.

The Sarlacc we encounter in Return of the Jedi is actually one of a whole species of sarlacc, spread throughout the Star Wars galaxy. These carnivorous creatures start life as spores that travel through space (that's right, they're not ground-bound), taking root on a host planet or asteroid before growing to full size over tens of thousands of years.

Though most of it is encased in the sand - with only a large beak, tentacles and several rows of teeth showing above the surface - the Sarlacc's body extends to around 100 metres below the ground, with various root-like appendages and stomach chambers that sustain its prey's life and allow it to digest its victims for over a thousand years.

Not to worry - they were said to exist a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, so perhaps they're extinct by now?
