10 Sci-Fi Horror Movies That Broke All The Rules
5. Monsters
Despite its title, 2010's Monsters didn't have a lot to do with the eponymous beasts, although they did lay waste to a few major cities offscreen.
Instead this indie from future Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards all but ignored the titular beasts and focused on the small scale personal drama of two mismatched survivors played to perfection by Whitney Able and Scoot McNairy.
A photographer and his boss' daughter, this pair had chemistry to spare and by envisioning a monster movie apocalypse through their intimate, limited view of it, Edwards' film upended the cliches of earlier giant monster movies such as the then-recent Cloverfield to create a more affecting, evocative image of the world in turmoil.
