10 Sci-Fi Movie Deaths That No One Saw Coming

5. Interstellar—Dr Mann

Remember how surprised you were to see Matt Damon the first time you watched 2014’s sci-fi thriller Interstellar? Like every Christopher Nolan film, the movie’s production had been shrouded in secrecy. But even knowing this, the fact that the actor appeared over an hour into proceedings still came as a shock for unsuspecting audiences.

The hero of the Bourne franchise, not to mention then-recent fellow space travel thriller The Martian, Damon was arguably the most famous actor in the film. His unsubtly named Dr Mann was soon expounding on his theories about how to save humanity, where they differed from the film’s heroes…

And that’s where things took a turn.

Okay, so the fact that he’s the film’s new villain is a shock in and of itself, a subversion of the actor’s good old boy charm that only Scorsese had managed to pull off before.

But just listen to his impassioned speech about why only his approach alone will work! Surely the film will hold off on offing him and offer the character a dignified death, a chance to redeem—Nope, he ends up killed via decompression, cutting him off mid-word whilst he’s still midway through his dramatic monologue.

Ouch.
