10 Sci-Fi Movie Fates Worse Than Death

4. Faulty Stasis Chamber - Passengers

The Fly
Sony Pictures

In Passengers, the Avalon is a sleeper ship carrying 5,000 colonists from Earth to a planet called Homestead II. The journey between takes 120 years, so the crew and passengers are placed into stasis for the duration of the trip. Unfortunately, an asteroid collision changes things for one unlucky passenger.

James "Jim" Preston was the unfortunate soul who was woken up only 30 years into the journey, which meant he was looking at a 90-year voyage without anyone else to talk to besides an android bartender. At first, he tried to make the best of a bad situation, but it wasn't easy.

Due to his passenger class, he wasn't able to eat many varieties of food, and he couldn't go anywhere he wanted to on the ship. After a year, he began contemplating suicide, but he decided against killing himself when he happened by a pod containing a beautiful woman.

He ends up releasing her, which doomed her to a 90-year sentence aboard the ship, and while things work out in the end, that one malfunctioning stasis chamber effectively destroyed the life Jim had planned on living, which is why suicide was such a tantalizing prospect after a year by himself.
