This depiction of the future from Terry Gilliam manages to be both depressing and witty. It is fantastically crafted and was probably far too weird for most of the mainstream audiences at the time.

Brazil is from the same school of satire as classics like Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove, which is cited as ‘culturally and aesthetically relevant’ by the British Film Institute.

Gilliam’s vision of an oppressive future masterfully disguises social commentary with off-the-wall humor. It remains a stirring critique of modern society and has been able to acquire a massive cult following since its release, becoming an iconic staple of surrealist cinema.
