10 Sci-Fi Movie Flops That Were Actually Great

3. Dune (1984)

Dune David Lynch
Universal Pictures

Right, another weird one... This adaptation of the beloved novel of the same is remarkably polarizing. Some site it as one of David Lynch’s finest efforts (despite him distancing himself from the project after the release), and others think it is a disgraceful and inaccurate mess.

Now, whilst Dune is not without its flaws, it is a vital watch for any sci-fi fan. The visual landscapes portrayed by Lynch are jaw-dropping and the dream sequences and unsettling imagery draws parallels with Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

As with any film based on a book, the most enjoyable results are when the viewer allows the director to present the story relevant to the medium of film, instead of expecting a copy-and-pasting of the novel to the screen.

Dune is refreshingly odd, occasionally disturbing, and totally deserving of its loyal cult following.
