Fans of Ridley Scott's original replica-hunting thriller had to wait 35 years for another instalment in the series, but they were not disappointed when it finally hit screens.

This time helmed by Dune and Arrival director, Denis Villeneuve, Blade Runner 2049 puts Ryan Gosling front and centre as K, a Blade Runner who makes a shocking discovery about the bio-engineered replicants who serve as humanity's slaves.

The discovery takes on a journey across a futuristic world inhabited by characters from the first Blade Runner movie and brand-new creations. Dave Bautista, Ana de Armas, and Sylvia Hoeks are excellent in supporting roles, and Harrison Ford's return as Rick Deckard is an extremely welcome sight.

Following up on a stone cold classic like Blade Runner was never going to be easy, but Villeneuve smashes it out of the park. The themes are all in keeping with the original and the new film looks just as good as its '80s counterpart, thanks to legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins.

Whilst rejected by some Blade Runner purists, 2049 is a sequel that more than lives up to its name. If you have reservations about watching the film, do yourself a favour put them to one side.
