10 Sci-Fi Movie Villains That Killed The Hero

Set in Spain toward the end of The Second World War, the story centres around ten year-old Ofelia, forced to move into the home of her new step-father, Captain Vidal due to her mother's pregnancy and ill health. While there, Ofelia is beset by a host of fantasy creatures, including a nightmarish fawn that claims she is the reincarnated spirit of the Princess of the Underworld.

Traversing through the many "labyrinths" supposedly crafted by her spiritual father and King of the Underworld, Ofelia faces off against a range of terrifying threats, such The Pale Man, who - let's face it - gave us all nightmares. Seriously Ofelia, all you had to do was not eat those grapes.

Unfortunately, it is an altogether more human horror that brings her to her demise. Throughout the entire story, Vidal descends further into madness as he hunts down rebel spies to the regime he commands, many of which turn out to be his own staff.

Wrongfully assuming Ofelia's actions and disappearances to be treachery, he guns her down while in the middle of her final task to reach the underworld. She does get her retribution however, in the form of her stepfather meeting the same fate.
