10 Sci-Fi Movies That Almost Had Way Better Endings
7. Bennell Goes Crazy On The Highway - Invasion Of The Body Snatchers
Sci-fi classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers was directed by the legendary Don Siegel, and although it's regarded as a staple of the genre, the final movie isn't what the director intended - namely in way that it employs a flashback device to recount the story. "The film was nearly ruined by those in charge at Allied Artists who added a preface and ending that I don't like," he explained. "Walter Wanger was very much against this, as was I. However, he begged me to shoot it to protect the film, and I reluctantly consented." Indeed: in its current form, Body Snatchers opens with Bennell ranting in a hospital ward, before recounting his story - the film itself - to a doctor. In the last scene, pods are discovered, Bennell's story is confirmed, and the FBI are able to save the day. This was thought to be too happy by Siegel, who preferred a bleaker ending with the film cutting to the credits as Bennell screams: "They're here already! You're next! You're next!" Alas, the studio disagreed and the film exists today with that prologue and epilogue - a shame when you consider it feels out of place and even compromised Siegel's vision.
