10 Sci-Fi Movies That Almost Had Way Better Endings

6. Jillian Isn't Possessed; Winds Up Pregnant With Alien Twins - The Astronaut's Wife

It's rare that a "happier" ending is more interesting than a bleak and depressing one, but that's the case with The Astronaut's Wife, which stars Johnny Depp as an astronaut who returns home to his wife (Charlize Theron) after a space mission gone wrong, who soon realises - in a creepy horror/sci-fi way - that her husband isn't the man she once knew. In the original ending to the movie, then, it turns out that Depp's character, Spencer, is being controlled by an alien host; his wife, Jillian, is forced to kill him, but - in a bleak twist - the alien transfers into her. The film ends with the possessed Jillian, now remarried with twin boys and a new, unsuspecting husband, watching them as they go off to school. The alternate ending, however, which was filmed but ultimately scrapped, was ever so slightly more upbeat and a lot more interesting: in this version, the final scene would have had Jillian not possessed by the alien, but - instead - the film would have hinted that her and Spencer's unborn twin children were subtly influencing her decisions. Very creepy.
