10 Sci-Fi Movies That Aren’t As Bad As Everyone Says
6. The Chronicles of Riddick
Written and directed by Below's David Twohy, 2000's low budget space set horror Pitch Black is another tense and intensely claustrophobic small scale psychological thriller from the director. The film follows Vin Diesel's stoic convict as he and a dwindling party of crash survivors attempt to survive on a planet where nights are long, cold, and filled with toothy monstrosities that can only attack and devour in the darkness.
The movie was a smash hit despite its gory horror and bleak, uncompromising tone, resulting in an inevitable sequel only three years later.
Softened to earn a PG-13 rating, the more action-oriented Chronicles of Riddick was critically maligned for its less violent action thrills and its more expansive, some might say somewhat convoluted, backstory.
PG-13 it may be, though, this much-maligned Pitch Black sequel was far better than critics claim.
After over a decade of MCU instalments, the plot which was once-considered knotty and over-baked now seems comically simple, whilst Diesel is as gruffly engaging as ever. Can it hold a candle to the later, harsher sequel Riddick? Of course not, but PG-13 horror was always graded on a curve, and this one more than passes the test.
