10 Sci-Fi Movies That Aren’t As Bad As Everyone Says
2. Sunshine
Danny Boyle's 2007 hit Sunshine was dismissed by numerous critics who expected an intense space-set thriller and instead got a gory horror that just so happened to be set in space.
But the thing is, if you go into this one expecting a gory slasher film with a slow burn mystery at its core, an over-qualified cast, and gorgeous cinematography... well, you're in for a treat.
It may end up being a space-set slasher, but what a beautifully shot space-set slasher it is, and there's no denying that the script from future Ex Machina scribe Alex Garland boasts the same propulsive action and razor sharp wit as that later claustrophobic thriller.
Like Garland and Boyle's earlier collaboration The Beach, the film is uneven and imperfect. But most of the beef that critics have seems to come from the movie's sci-fi milieu making its horror elements an unexpected surprise.
Go into Sunshine looking for a horror and you'll be hit with a tense, terrifying genre mashup which boasts the likes of Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, and Rose Byrne amongst its impressive cast and features some thrilling chase sequences as well as inventive, gruesome death scenes.
