10 Sci-Fi Movies That Aren’t As Bad As Everyone Says

It's fair to say that Nacho Vigalondo's Colossal failed more due to inaccurate advertising than any faults with the film itself.

That said, for once the blame doesn't fall entirely at the feet of the film's marketing department, as it's hard to imagine how any trailer could effectively market a movie as odd as this sci-fi comedy.

After all, the Timecrimes director's earlier work all falls (broadly speaking) into the genres of sci-fi, horror, and black comedy.

As a result, most viewers expected more of the same from 2016's Colossal, an Anne Hathaway starring film wherein the heroine discovers she controls the movements of a giant monster which is currently tearing up a city the entire world away.

What no one expected from the film was a moving drama about abuse which just happened to also be a kaiju movie.

But despite the film's infamous midway plot switch, it’s an underrated gem which manages to tackle issues as heavy as gaslighting, emotional abuse, and alcoholism through a huge scale creature feature. How does "Godzilla crossed with The Girl on the Train" work as a tagline?
