10 Sci-Fi Movies That Break The Genre
3. Her
Her, like many of the other entries on this list, stands out from your standard sci-fi fare because of the scale of the story it tells. Her is in many ways more of a romantic drama that borrows elements from science fiction.
Spike Jonze's beautiful film tells the story of Joaquin Phoenix's Theodore as he undertakes a whirlwind relationship with his operating system. The film takes a premise that would have so many dystopian science fiction writers salivating with the potential and uses it to instead tell a touching tale of love overcoming all else.
It is, ironically, an incredibly human story that manages to, not only exist, but thrive in an incredibly original sci-fi setting. The acting is predictably stunning from Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson and helps the story to feel real despite the ludicrous circumstances surrounding it.
Her is both one of the greatest recent romantic films and also an incredibly clever and layered science fiction film that deviates, to its betterment, from so much of the standard staples of the genre.
