10 Sci-Fi Movies That Confused Everyone

4. Cube (1997)

Possession 1981
Trimark Pictures

Cube is a movie that does not change from the first scene to the climax. People wake up inside a giant cube made up of identical rooms, and there are deadly traps laced throughout them. The traps also need to be figured out by a mathematical equation humans can't process themselves.

So just what the hell is going on?

Well, you are never told why the people are in the cube, who placed them there to face this horrifying ordeal, or even what the cube even is. It's a test in frustration as the movie never gives you a firm answer to anything.

Even the few people we meet inside the cube have only vague, wild guesses as to what is going on, and by the end of the movie, you'd be forgiven for thinking you just spent 90 minutes watching people wander through identical square sets.

The true genius of Cube is these questions aren't meant to be answered, it's a careful reversed interpretation of narratives and themes we all know. Each person's personalities drastically change over the course of the movie to play with our ideas of character types and prejudices.

We may never get an explanation for almost everything in Cube, but that's what makes deconstructing it's hidden qualities all the more exciting. What at first appears to be an empty shell of a movie blossoms into a gripping experience in playing with the expectations of the audience.
