10 Sci-Fi Movies That Confused Everyone
3. Annihilation (2018)
After a mysterious dome-like bubble forms from a meteor strike over a large area that is known as the Shimmer. A crack team of scientists prepare an expedition into the anomalous zone that causes genetic refraction to all who enter.
Most people will have a difficult time wrapping their heads around just what the hell genetic refraction is, but the whole film just gets increasingly stranger. By the time we finally reach the center of the shimmer, Natalie Portman finds a video of her husband killing himself and a metallic looking humanoid that mimics her movements and eventually her appearance.
It's never really made clear just what the thing is or what it intends to do. If it is malevolent or merely following her movements as it grows and adapts. These copies of people also contain shimmering green eyes that give away their true nature.
She tricks the doppelganger into killing itself, the Shimmer dome disappears, and then outside she meets up with her not-dead husband who we are lead to believe is a clone himself and as her eyes glow green with the shimmer the film ends.
What exactly was the Shimmer? Why did the Alien make Doppelgangers? Is Lena somehow a clone or just changed by the Shimmer? Was it her husband that killed himself, or his Doppelganger?
Keep guessing, because no one has a firm answer. It's a provocative movie that lingers in your mind due to just how bizarre yet captivating the entire thing is.
