10 Sci-Fi Movies That Forced You To Answer Impossible Questions
8. Could You Abandon Your Family To Save Humanity? - Interstellar
Christopher Nolan's Interstellar sees engineer and former NASA pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) heading into space in the desperate hope of finding a new home for humanity as Earth's environment becomes increasingly hostile.
Coop is tragically forced to leave his family, including daughter Murph (Mackenzie Foy) and son Tom (Timothée Chalamet), back on Earth, and due to the necessity of travelling through a wormhole, Coop experiences extreme time dilation.
This means that while a mere two-ish years pass for Coop, back on Earth somewhere between 75-90 years have passed.
When Coop finally returns at the end of the movie, Murph (Ellen Burstyn) is now an elderly woman, and it's implied that Tom (Casey Affleck) has most likely died.
Though the enormity of saving humanity from annihilation speaks for itself, could you do so at the cost of missing your children living out their lives and probably having to bury one of them in the near-future?
From a utilitarian perspective the choice seems obvious, but actually making it? Decidedly less so.
And for that reason, you sure as hell hope NASA would pick someone without any major familial connections to undertake this mission, right?
