10 Sci-Fi Movies That Got The Science Right

4. Moon (2009)

DEEP IMPACT DISASTER
Sony Pictures Classics

Moon is one of those movies that came out and wowed a lot of nerds but went by without much notice by the rest of the world. It's worth watching if you haven't seen it for a plethora of reasons, least of all its scientific authenticity.

While the film's cloning premise remains outside our current technological means, every other aspect of its science is grounded in reality. The reason anyone is on the Moon in the film is to manage the mining equipment that is scouring the regolith for H3.

Helium-3 isn't as abundant as we might like, but it's all over the surface of the Moon. Creating a large operation that's overseen by a single person is the most cost-efficient means of acquiring it, so Moon gets a lot of things right with its overall premise.

The structures seen in the movie were created using that same lunar regolith to create concrete. This has been tested and proven to be the best way to construct buildings on the Moon. Most folks call it Lunacrete or Mooncrete, but whatever you call it, it's locally-sourced concrete on the Moon.

On top of all that scientific accuracy, Moon tells a great human story, and if you haven't seen it, it's time you did!
