This 1950s sci-fi classic is perhaps the definitive example of the fear and intolerance perpetuated by us humans. Sometimes, aliens don't come to Earth to blow us to bits; sometimes, they're here to save us from destroying ourselves.

Klaatu, an alien who looks and acts remarkably human, arrives with his robot companion, Gort, to deliver a message to the human race. His ship is immediately circled by military vehicles, and when Klaatu reveals a small gift for the President of the United States, he is fired upon by a soldier who misinterprets his actions.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. When he recovers, Klaatu is taken to Professor Barnhardt, who, after being told to heed Klaatu's message, asks him to demonstrate his power. Klaatu does so by deactivating the entire world's non-emergency electricity, which is instantly taken as an act of war, and he is shot dead.

Briefly revived long enough to escape, the dying Klaatu reveals his message: "Your choice is simple: join us and live in peace, or pursue your present course and face obliteration. We shall be waiting for your answer."

In other words, all he wanted to do was help the Earth avoid its own path of destruction. How telling it is that it took his death for the humans to understand that.
