10 Scrapped Horror Movie Sequels Much Better Than What We Got

Years before blowing up the box office with his Lord of the Rings trilogy, Peter Jackson was best known for his low budget movies Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles. These films would eventually earn him notice from New Line Cinema who were so impressed by these efforts that they invited him to write a script for the supposedly final installment in the Nightmare on Elm Street series.

Jackson’s script (co-written with Danny Mulheron) dealt with a Freddy Krueger considered to be a such a non-threatening entity that teenagers would intentionally fall asleep just so they could antagonize and beat up the weak and pathetic dream demon. At a certain point in the story one foolish teen would mess up and die by Krueger’s hand, granting him enough energy to return to his former glory.

As at this time the series had become a joke to many, Jackson’s idea seemed to be a commentary on the franchise itself. Unfortunately, many who have read the screenplay stated that it wasn’t very good so New Line went with another script they commissioned at the time, this one written by franchise regulars Michael De Luca and Rachel Talalay.

While maybe not the best script (which can’t be confirmed as it doesn’t seem to have been released to the public), the ideas were sound, and perhaps with some tweaking it could’ve been a better “ending” to the franchise than we were granted with Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare.

And while we mourn what might have been, let's not forget that if Jackson got the Freddy gig he may never have made his next film, Braindead (a.k.a. Dead Alive).
