Avengers: Infinity War opens with Thanos (Josh Brolin) having already acquired the Power Stone off-screen, with only a single reference made to the Mad Titan "decimating" Xandar the week before the events of the movie.

Naturally, most fans expected to see the destruction of the planet in Infinity War, along with Thanos' acquisition of stone, only for the Russo brothers to skip over it entirely.

But Thanos did sack Xandar on-screen in an earlier version of the script.

Co-writer Christopher Markus said, "We wrote version of Thanos attacking Xandar and it had a similar purpose in the script to what Knowhere does now. It was a place where Thanos and Gamora encountered each other but the fact of the matter is you know exactly what...If Thanos went to Xandar to get that stone, you know what happened. It was a big battle and he got it."

Joe Russo added, "It was an attempt to not be repetitive. We decided to cut it from the script and...start in the middle of the story."

Still, many fans would love to see the sequence play out, and with the possibility of a Nova movie coming in the near-future, it'd be the perfect opportunity to depict Xandar's annihilation, tying it to Richard Rider's origin story.
