10 Secrets From The Set Of Ridley Scott's Alien
9. Ridley Scott Clashed With Producers Over The Watery Room
Directing a movie for a big studio often isn't as simple as just being given a big chunk of money and sent off to make precisely what you want.
Whilst creating the grotesque creature that was his Alien baby, Ridley Scott told The Telegraph (via Independent) he found himself having to explain each and every move he made to producers who didn't fully understand the bold and compelling choices he was making on set.
For example, that scene where engineer Brett (Harry Dean Stanton) is viciously murdered by the terrifying Xenomorph in a dripping room on the ship? Producers behind the picture couldn't get their heads around how this would be possible on a vehicle floating around space. Where would the water be coming from? They also didn't understand why there would be chains hanging from the ceiling here either.
Scott felt the scene where the alien attacks needed more movement and that the water was merely condensation from the ship's air conditioning. That was seemingly enough to shut those producers up and one of the movie's most memorable scenes kept its watery chains.
