10 Sequels That Ruined Great Movie Endings

1. Alien: Resurrection

Originally, I had Alien 3 on this list. It existing at all flies in the face of Aliens' hopeful climax, but killing off Newt and Hicks is just about justified by giving Ripley herself a proper send-off in one of the most spectacular sacrifices in cinema history.

Alien: Resurrection, on the other hand, has no redeeming story beats that hit that level, and every second actively undermines everything that came before. That's because the filmmakers had to bring back Sigourney Weaver's Ripley, and did so by cloning her (along with the alien embryo inside her). Consequently, her sacrifice in the previous flick is rendered moot, and it was all in service of bringing back the character as a dumb human-alien hybrid thing.

The film itself was terrible, but it's made worse because it disrupted a perfectly natural ending for the franchise.
