It's no secret that movie sequels are a tough cookie to crack. There's a line every director has to walk when crafting a follow up, between giving the audience more of what they loved the first time round and delivering a story that's new, fresh, and able to carry on the franchise in a natural way.

The MCU has nailed this formula, but not every series is so lucky. Hell, the reality is there's plenty of big names out there that only received a sequel because the producers who owned them wanted to line their pockets with more filthy riches, and couldn't have cared less whether or not the story itself demanded extending.

These are always the most frustrating sequels to watch, as the writers are forced to bend over backwards to come up with a contrived reason for them to exist in the first place. Sometimes they pull it off and the film is good enough to justify the messiness, but other times a writer will dig up the ending of an amazing film and bastardize its corpse just so a sequel can be made, ruining something good in the process.
