This may come as a surprise to many, as Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece of science fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, has a sequel. To date the ending and the meaning of 2001: A Space Odyssey is up for debate, and is part of why the film is so special and successful. This was set to change in 1982 when writer of the original story for 2001, Arthur C. Clarke, published a follow up titled 2010: Odyssey Two.

Clarke was then approached by MGM, who were keen on cashing in on the success of the first flick. One slight issue however was that director Stanley Kubrick had no interest in the project, and it fell to writer and director Peter Hyams to make the feature.

After eventually releasing in 1984, 2010: The Year We Make Contact in no way neared the visual mastery or storytelling of 2001. Despite being an enjoyable work, the follow up in many ways ruined the impact of the ending of the original.

At the end of that movie we are left unsure of what happened to the Jupiter mission, but unfortunately 2010 explicitly removes the mystery by explaining away the enigma that is 2001: A Space Odyssey.
