1990's The Godfather Part 3 was reluctantly made by director Francis Ford Coppola in an attempt to improve his standings with Paramount after the commercial failure of some of his most recent efforts. As a result, we ended up with an underwhelming unnecessary finale to two classic films.

The movie sees an ageing Michael Corleone in a convoluted plot to become a legitimate businessman and restore the reputation of his family. One of the most controversial elements of the story was the casting of Sofia Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola's own daughter as Michael Corleone's daughter Mary.

Just as anticipated, The Godfather Part 3 was a huge box office success but was criticised for its confusing plot. Most of the negativity around the piece was directed towards the performance of Sofia Coppola. Coppola was also thrust accusations of favouritism surrounding her casting and sub par acting.

The Godfather Part 3 has had a slight redemption in recent years, as Francis Ford Coppola recut it in 2020 and released a new version under a different title. Now titled The Godfather Coda: The Death Of Michael Corleone, the new version was praised as a definite improvement over the original.
