8. Douglas Quaid Gets Bullets Fired At Him; Uses Innocent Bystander As Human Shield - Total Recall
Total Recall is an incredibly violent '90s action movie that pits Arnold Schwarzenegger against his own memories. Or, you know, something like that. Bored with his seemingly perfect life as a construction worker and husband of Sharon Stone (back when Sharon Stone was the hottest actress in the world), Douglas Quaid - that's Schwarzenegger - pays a visit to a futuristic implant company who agree to give him the memories of a secret agent. During the procedure, though, things go horribly wrong, and Quaid awakens with what are apparently subdued memories of his life as a real secret agent. From there on it, it just gets more confusing (in a good way). Given that Total Recall was directed by Paul Verhoeven, though, who is also the mastermind behind such violent classics as RoboCop and Starship Troopers, this movie is excessively bloody. That's to say, when Quaid suddenly finds himself pursued by government douchebags, we're treated to an extensive chase scene. At one point (and remember Quaid is our "likeable" protagonist), Quaid leaps onto an escalator, only to find himself facing a hail of bullets. To avoid death, he grabs an innocent bystander and uses him - yes - as a human shield. My... hero?
