10 Seriously Messed Up Psychological Horror Movies
7. Apostle (2018)
You can learn a lot of lessons from horror movies. For example, if there's a mysterious island populated by a religious cult, don't go there. Also, if you're sister was taken and forced to join a cult, don't try to save her. And, if in some crazy scenario those two things are combined, stay the hell away. It seems horror films really want you to avoid cults in general.
Apostle combines those ideas as it follows a scarred man named Thomas (Dan Stevens) as he enters a religious commune on a remote Welsh island. Thomas' mission is to find his sister, who was kidnapped by this cult.
What makes this movie so fascinating is that you get a profoundly psychological flick behind all the body horror, violence and tension. The whole thing builds up slowly, as you see the cult have a leadership crisis and come to learn about the personal demons/struggles of the leading character. This gives the film some natural substance behind the stylish visuals and more twisted moments.
But, don't feel free from scares, as the few "twisted moments" will stick with you. There's one execution scene in particular that will haunt you for the rest of your days.
