From blood-thirsty cannibal killers, vengeful spirits, to chilling portraits of existential terror, horror is a genre can do whatever it wants to deliver those oh so delicious scares.

And while mainstream horror cinema predominately plays things safe, offering creepy dolls and increasingly predictable jump scares to satisfy mainstream audiences, there are plenty of other horror movies on the periphery that are just too weird for most viewers to stomach.

Whether it’s for their completely bonkers premise, excessive violence, peculiar style, or a combination of all three, these forgotten black sheep are just waiting to be discovered and loved by devout fans.

10. Possum

The feature debut from Matthew Holness, the creator of cult British TV show Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place, Possum is an unsettling and hypnotic tale of disgraced children’s puppeteer Philip (Sean Harris) returning to his childhood home where he’s confronted by his traumatic past as he attempts to destroy the titular, nightmarish puppet. But despite his best efforts he can’t escape his past or Possum, who always seems to come back.

Premiering at Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2018 before having a very limited cinema release, Possum enjoyed a generally positive reception from critics but has gathered a pretty mixed reception since, with some writing it off as too strange and slow whereas others have applauded it for its skin-crawling visuals, twisted tale, and surrealist tone – aided in no small part with music from Doctor Who’s Radiophonic Workshop.

A small film with a distinct vision, Possum is one of the best British horrors you haven’t seen. And this isn’t even mentioning the puppet itself, which is every arachnophobes’ worst nightmare.
