If you're a fan of Monty Python and its only American member, Terry Gilliam, odds are you've seen Brazil so many times, you can quote it from memory. For most other casual fans of science-fiction, there's a good chance this movie slipped by their attention, and that's a shame.

The movie is, at its core, a satire, but it's set within a science-fiction backdrop featuring a dystopian Orwellian society, where every aspect of a person's life is managed in ridiculous and often deadly ways. The story revolves around a low-level bureaucrat named Sam Lowly, who discovers that a mistake was made, and the wrong man was killed by a literal bug in the system.

As he investigates the mistake further, he finds an escape fro the day-to-day monotony of his office job in an exploration of his daydreams that play out in the meeting of a woman he could only dream of before meeting her.

Gilliam described the world of Brazil as being "very much like our world" but "just off by five degrees." This gives the film an unsettling appeal, as it does mirror the horrific bureaucracy and red tape that is ever-present in our daily lives. The film is strangely beautiful while managing to remain terrifying and just a little bit hopeful, and if you've never seen it, you need to fix that as soon as possible.
