After a string of inventive, original and effective films beginning with the Sixth Sense in 1999, M Night Shayalaman was being hailed as The New Spielberg.

However, his fall from grace began with Lady In The Water and would continue to gain unfortunate momentum with such prize turkeys as The Last Airbender and The Happening.

Thankfully, The Visit, while not perfect, was a welcome return to form and has one of the most ludicrously effective jump scares this century.

Here, Becca and Tyler are staying with their grandparents for the week, having never met them owing to a long standing family feud, which Becca hopes to resolve through the power of film. Her documentary rushes make up the found-footage style presentation of the movie.

Shayamalan cleverly brings the twist to the beginning of the last act, if you hadn't spotted it already: Pop Pops and Nanna are in fact escaped mental patients and the preceding hour of increasingly disturbing nocturnal events (Nanna's compulsive banging, scraping and puking is enough to bring on the judder) all make sense in time for the tense finale.

Becca, a savvy kid indeed, hides a camera in the living room one night to capture some of these alarming displays of obsessive compulsive tendencies. Nanna does her scuttle across the floor, terrifying enough, and drops out of frame. The seconds feel like minutes, you know it's coming and then... BANG.

She leaps into frame, snarling at the lens and filling many an underpant in the process.
