10 Shocking Remakes Made By Directors Who Didn't Understand The Original

4. The Day The Earth Stood Still (Scott Derrickson)

The Day The Earth Stood Still The original The Day the Earth Stood Still remains a classic of sci-fi cinema, a cautionary tale about how technology needs to be used responsibly rather than for nefarious means (specifically warfare). In the end, humanity learned a lesson from the alien Klaatu, and everybody was a bit better off. The 2008 remake cast Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, an unusual but smart choice, given that Reeves is notorious for playing hollow shells extremely well, and that's exactly what the role demanded of him. However, the film completely disregards the message of the original film; rather than give humans a chance to do good with their technology, the film ends with human beings having their entire electrical capabilities wiped out, forcing them to start from scratch. So, um, what about everyone hooked up to a machine at a hospital, or everyone with a pacemaker? Wow, Klaatu was kind of an a**hole in the remake.
