10 Slasher Movies That Never Got A Sequel (But Should Have)
3. Happy Birthday To Me
Happy Birthday To Me was far too clever for its time. Most of these movies can be explained as "a killer goes around murdering teenagers," but this one has much more going on than that, with a twisted, convoluted mystery and insane revelations all throughout.
The movie follows Ginny, a high school teen and member of a clique called the Top Ten. Leading up to her 18th birthday, Ginny's friends begin to go missing. From early on, this is already a different kind of slasher because not long into the movie, it's heavily implied that Ginny herself is the killer. That wasn't enough of a twist apparently, because the final scene reveals that (spoiler alert!) the killer was actually Ginny's evil twin sister who had been disguised as Ginny in order to frame her. Now that's a crazy plan right there.
It was probably way too complicated for a genre that relies on simplicity, but the movie is still surprisingly well written and keeps you guessing throughout. Perhaps it's better as a one off film, but the ending leaves a lot of questions as to what will happen to the real Ginny, who's now accused of murder, and it would be great to see more in this universe. Instead, it's just an obscure cult classic that was too smart for its own good.
