10 Slasher Movies That Never Got A Sequel (But Should Have)
2. Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon
Jumping ahead to a more modern example, Behind The Mask has got to be one of the most creative ideas for a slasher movie in history. The 2006 film is a mockumentary that takes place in a universe where slasher villains actually exist, and it follows an aspiring serial killer who hopes to become the next Freddy or Jason. How genius is that?
Leslie Vernon basically models himself off slasher conventions, basing his "character" off some urban legend about a kid who drowned in a lake. A bunch of teenagers come to an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere, and Leslie plans to pick them all off one by one while the documentary crew catches everything. Ever wonder what preparations a villain makes before his victims arrive, or why he always just walks along at a slow pace while everyone else runs? Behind the Mask answers those questions and tackles horror tropes in a deadpan, darkly hilarious fashion.
The movie clearly establishes Leslie Vernon as a great new slasher villain, and by the end it's revealed that he's still alive, setting everything up perfectly for a series of hilarious and self-aware films on par with Scream. Unfortunately, the movie was more of a cult hit and only received a limited release, and nearly 10 years later, there have been no discussions of a followup.
