10 Small Changes That Would Fix Terrible Films
6. Cut The Runtime By 45 Minutes - Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End
The Problem: After a brilliantly original adventure flick in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, a solid sequel, Dead Man's Chest, was released three years later that, though not quite as good as the original, was still a fun, wash-buckling adventure.
At 145 minutes, though, it was certainly getting on the long side, yet director Gore Verbinski took one look at that $1 billion box office haul and deduced that "more is better", resulting in the 168-minute third film, At World's End.
Why It Would Fix The Film: There's plenty to be entertained by in Pirates 3, but it's hard to notice considering how freaking bloated this thing is. For starters, the entire debacle with Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) being stranded in Davy Jones' Locker goes on for what seems like forever, with the surreal CGI-driven mayhem appearing to be a way for Verbinski to justify his $300 million budget and little else.
In addition, there's at least half a dozen characters too many, a large number of whom could easily be lost without impacting the plot too much. Streamline the narrative, cut down on the indulgent Johnny Depp mincing, and beef up the action sequences.
Make it 120 minutes long and no more, and At World's End would be a snappy, breezily entertaining action adventure.
