10 Small Details You Missed In Dune

2. Riding The Sandworms

Dune Mentat
Warner Bros.

At the end of the film, just as Chani says to Paul, "this is only the beginning," hyping the audience up for part two, we see, for a split second, an unnamed Fremen riding atop a sandworm far off in the desert. After seeing how uncontrollable and dangerous the sandworms of Arrakis are to anyone else, watching the Fremen guide them with ease is quite a sight to behold.

The practice of riding sandworms to traverse the desert is common among the Fremen and all Fremen children must learn to control them as a rite of passage. This is also why, after Liet Kynes (a Fremen) summons a sandworm with a thumper, just before she is killed, she prepares her hooks. These hooks are used to guide the sandworms and are called maker hooks.

Unfortunately we only get to see a small clip of someone riding a sandworm in this first movie, mostly just to show the true desert power of the Fremen.
