We can't let the heroes and survivors get all the credit, now, because the killers by their sheer nature have employed some extremely crafty and cunning tricks to throw suspicion off themselves.

And few have done it better than Billy Loomis, who quite ingeniously arranges for himself to be suspected of being Ghostface and consequently exonerated by working in tandem with his co-killer Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard).

After Sidney is first attacked by Ghostface (this time portrayed by Stu, clearly), Billy arrives moments later to console her and a phone drops out of his pocket, causing him to be immediately suspected and arrested.

However, while Billy is in custody Sid receives another call from Ghostface - again, Stu - making it clear beyond any reasonable doubt that Billy couldn't be the killer, effectively giving him a stone-cold alibi.

Billy made the smart assumption that nobody would ever guess there were two killers working together, and while everyone certainly got wise to this in future Ghostface massacres, for the original it was an ingenious way to cast suspicion away from himself until the pivotal reveal.

Billy and Stu may have gotten sloppy with the details later on, but this genius bait-and-switch effectively allowed him to operate without constantly looking over his shoulder.
