10 Smartest Zombies In Horror Movies

7. The Darkseekers - I Am Legend

Day of the Dead Bub
Warner Bros.

In Richard Mattheson's novel, I Am Legend, the creatures that Robert Neville fought exhibited traits of vampires. They had the stereotypical aspects of the nocturnal animal such as weaknesses to garlic and holy symbols. In the 2007 Will Smith film, however, the Darkseekers were portrayed as a hybrid between vampires and zombies.

These versions were initially humans who were infected by the Kripplin Virus but did not die from it. Instead, they become nocturnal creatures who are faster than a normal man and can build complex traps from memory.

The vampire part, then, comes from their weakness to UV rays which meant they only lurked during evenings. But in the film's original ending - which was closer to the source material - these creatures are revealed to have been more than what they seemed.

Earlier on, Neville had captured a female Darkseeker whom he used for his experiments. When the Alpha follows him by the end of the movie, it's revealed that he was simply looking for his mate all along. After realizing that he has become the monster in these creatures' eyes, Neville gives him back his mate, and the Alpha and his group leave our protagonist alone.
