The Breakfast Club is one of the best movies of the ’80s and has only grown in popularity in the time since its release. The film’s coming of age story of teenagers in detention set the standard for its genre, and one song cemented its importance right at its conclusion.

Written specifically with the movie in my mind, Simple Mind’s fantastic ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ evokes everything that makes the motion picture such an effective piece of work. As the newly acquainted students separate in the film’s finale, this reflective song plays over it with a real sense of purpose.

Musically, the track is perfectly on point. Stunning gated reverb drum loops, futuristic swathes of synth and an understated vocal display all add up to make this a pop-tastic delight in its own right. However, set to an ending as satisfying as that of The Breakfast Club, the track simply soars to even greater heights.

Rarely does a song capture everything contained in a two hour movie, but this ’80s tune is the exception to the rule.
