10 Space Movies That Broke All The Rules

5. Gravity

Solaris George Clooney
Warner Bros. Pictures

Anchored by a stunning performance from Sandra Bullock, Gravity utilised the latest technology, and the directorial prowess of Alfonso CuarĂ³n to create a beautiful and believable space-set story that focused on human resilience in the most testing of times.

Spending much of the film on her own, this film would simply not work if it wasn't for Bullock's incredible performance, and to no surprise, the awards followed. With only herself to act against for the most part, she goes to astonishing lengths to convey the emotional journey of the character, which arguably has as much impact as the physical journey she embarks on.

What Gravity proved, was that sometimes simplicity is the most powerful thing, and when a space movie is stripped back, it can once again break the rules and push the boundaries.
