10 Space Movies That Broke All The Rules

3. Event Horizon

Solaris George Clooney
Paramount Pictures

Whilst this film was something of a box office flop upon it's initial 1997 release, Event Horizon has subsequently developed quite a cult following, and is widely regarded as one of the best and most under-appreciated sci-fi horrors.

Taking its influence from the claustrophobic and isolated setting of The Shining, Event Horizon undoubtedly succeeds in being both terrifying and ground-breaking in both genres that it sits in. It is dark, gory, and unashamedly weird, with some imagery that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

Released just one year before the sci-fi/disaster renaissance with Deep Impact and Armageddon facing off, Event Horizon proved that the genre could be still be strange, twisted and terrifying.
