10 Space Movies That Broke All The Rules

2. Contact

Solaris George Clooney
Warner Bros.

1997 was quite the banner year for rule-breaking space movies, and Contact is absolutely one of those, albeit for very different reasons from Event Horizon!

Less sci-fi blockbuster, and more of a reflective, spiritual think piece, this film focused on our very human need to converse and commune with people, or in this case aliens. In her journey to make "contact" with other beings, Jodie Foster's Dr Ellie actually ends up on a very personal journey that provides much food for thought for us as the audience.

It is clear to see the influence this film had on other thoughtful space movies such as Interstellar, Arrival, and Gravity, and what it may lack in action, it more than makes up for in drama, emotion, and potent storytelling.
