5. Drag Me To Hell
Drag Me to Hell went for a classic B-movie vibe, centring on a story about gypsy curses. When the protagonist, Christine, a mild-mannered bank clerk, denies a hideous old crone a mortgage extension, the woman attacks and curses her in revenge. Christine is then haunted by a demon who will drag her to Hell in three day which, if you ask me, is a bit overkill when it comes to punishing somebody for just doing their job. An attack of boils would have probably sufficed, but then who am I to question an evil magical gypsy? Drag Me to Hell is silly in quite a grim way. The evil gypsy is tremendously spooky, and the beginning of the film does insinuate that this film would be more horrific than entertaining. Sam Raimi manages to bring the out-dated gypsy curse stereotype into the modern world with a wink and a nudge, making this film both extremely frightening whilst it's also laughably ridiculous for much of its runtime.
