10 Spooky Halloween Movies To Freak Your Kids Out

7. The Witches (1990)

Considering he was one of the best loved children's authors of all time Roald Dahl was certainly keen to scare the pants off a generation of kids and never was his work more terrifying than when it was adapted for the big screen as Jim Henson Production's The Witches.

The Witches is a simple enough premise. A young boy and his all knowing Grandma vacation in Cornwall but unwittingly check into the same hotel as that year's Witches Convention. At face value the Witches don't seem all that different to ordinary folk but once on their own they reveal their true forms as hideous, child eating crones plotting the downfall of all Britain's youngsters.

Angelica Houston is perfectly cast as the debonair looking Grand High Witch who is in fact a bald, hook nosed, hairy chinned hag intent on having a small boy or two for supper. The premise of the book and film is creepy enough but watch the looks on your little kids faces when the women take off their faces. It still gives many of us the creeps even today.
